Male Hen Harrier at Catcott Lows

February 01, 2013  •  7 Comments

There has been a male hen harrier seen from the hide at Catcott Lows aver the last fortnight and I was lucky enough to see it today on my second attempt.  What a great bird!  Only managed a pretty distant shot or two.

A word of caution.  If you intend to visit, the track that leads to the reserve is very slippy with mud at present and full of potholes.  I managed to slide my car off the edge and needed the help of 5 burly birders to get back on again!

Hi Higgy

The lane is passable in an ordinary car. Just down trust the edges of the road even if this means traveling through some of the deeper pot holes. Plenty of parking available by the hide. If you don't fancy driving down the track, you can park at the bottom and walk the 300yards or so.

Good luck if you go. The bird has shown in the mornings and afternoons so no particular favoured time by the sound of things.

That's the sort of 'distant' shot I like!! I was planning on a visit at the weekend for this one so good to know it's still present at the moment. What sort of time is it tending to show?

I presume the lane is passable in a 4x4 and what about parking down there Tim?

Best

Thanks for your comments. Hopefully it will hang around long enough for me or someone else to get some much better pics.
